Abstract
Natural dyeing had an important place in the coloration of textiles until the discovery of synthetic dyes and for this aim; several different herbal sources could be used. In this study it was aimed to show the usability of basil in coloration of wool fabrics moreover it was tried to show the antimicrobial efficiency of the tested natural dye source. For this aim, basil plant which is obtained from regional markets was used as a natural dye source. This dried natural dye source was used in the coloring of wool fabrics directly after milling. The dyeing experiments were carried out with and without use of mordanting agents. After the dyeings, the color measurements of the dyed fabrics were evaluated on the spectrophotometer. In addition, the dyeing experiments have also been examined in terms of the light and washing fastness. Apart from these properties, the antibacterial properties of the samples of wool fabrics dyed without mordanting agents was also investigated. As a result, it has been found that basil can provide different opportunities for coloring wool fabrics.
