Determination of Pre-consolidation Pressure on Silty Soils with Different Clay Contents
Aşkın Özocak, Yadigar Altundağ
Abstract
Pre-consolidation pressure a soil represents the maximum stress value that the soil layer to be exposed in the past. This value is an important magnitude that determine the volume change and the consolidation behaviour of the soil layer under the stress variation. There a lot of studies in the literature about obtaining the pre-consolidation pressures of soil layers. All of these methods are required to use a consolidation curve which can be determined with the consolidation test. In these methods, today Casagrande method is the most preferred method. In this study, eight samples were reconstituted from soil-water slurry under 100 kPa vertical stress in laboratory with silty soils prepared in different clay contents, bring out from Adapazarı city center. Samples have been subjected consolidation tests with classical oedometer equipment. Pre-consolidation pressure values of soil samples were determined using the six different methods from literature with obtained consolidation curves. Obtained results show that Casagrande method which is the most preferred method in practice gives the best results.
